5 Alaska Home Projects to Complete This Summer

Summer is officially here in Alaska and with the new season comes a new wave of motivation for homeowners to finally tackle their to-do list that’s been growing all year. From painting the front door to replacing windows, now is indeed the time to improve your Anchorage home, beginning with the following top priority tasks:

    Replace windows
Even if you plan to spend all of your time indoors with the A/C on full blast, it couldn’t hurt to take a closer look at your windows. After all, the easiest way to watch your energy bills spike is to ignore faulty windows that might be letting warm air escape in the winter and cool air escape in the summer. Consider replacing your windows to help keep energy costs down and depending on where you place them, offer a better view.

    Plan landscaping
We shared a few budget-friendly curb appeal ideas in a past blog post, but why not take time this summer to plan landscaping for the future? If your yard is completely open, decide where you could use the shade most and plant trees now and reap the rewards later.

    Repave your driveway
If your driveway has taken a beating from winter’s dirt, grime, and the weight of winter toys—or even just wear and tear—now is when you should act on repaving. Summer is best to make sure everything adheres properly, as it’s not wise to pave in the snow or rain, and also repair any other walkways in need.

    Seal your deck
You’ll be spending a lot more time outdoors over the next few months, so take care of where you’ll be relaxing— likely your deck! If your deck hasn’t been sealed lately, act now to avoid wood rot and keep moisture at bay. One way to test the seal is to pour a small amount of water on the deck— if it beads up, it’s sealed properly. If it soaks in, it’s time to seal!

    Drain your water heater
The last thing you want to do in the winter is take apart your water heater. But now that the weather is warmer and we’re not so eager to jump into a steam shower for extra warmth, clear out the sediment from your water heater to get hotter water and prepare for winter.
