Wil Fernandez is more than a real estate agent, he’s also extremely involved at Colony High School motivating young swimmers to becoming their best selves in the pool and in their community. Wil began his career as a swim coach at the same time he began his career in real estate in the fall of 2011. Since beginning both roles he has continued to advance and push himself to always do more.
Wil was the assistant coach at Colony High School last year where he developed great relationships with his swimmers and their parents. At the end of the season, the head coach announced his retirement and naturally Wil was encouraged to fill the role. After accepting the challenge and becoming Colony High School’s head coach, Wil was approached by a parent of an upcoming senior swimmer with the idea of purchasing a record board to display at the practice pool as a means of motivation. Wil loved the idea and began working on the design concept and a way to raise the funds needed to purchase the record board. With stewardship being a core value at Northern Edge Real Estate, Wil approached our team with the idea of sponsoring 50% of the cost of the record board. We loved the idea of supporting a community of youths that means so much to one of our agents and especially liked the idea of motivating teens to reach their potential through a record board. So Northern Edge Real Estate (FKA Madden Real Estate) jumped on board and provided Colony High School with half of the funds needed to make this record board a reality. Wil was able to obtain another 50% sponsorship from a local communications company, MAT (Matanuska Telephone Company), and both companies were recognized through the design of the record board.
With the help of this motivational record board, Wil went on to lead his team to many victories, breaking a total of 28 school records (8 of which were broken at the state championship). The boys’ team placed 6th in the state, the highest the team has ever placed, and scored the most points ever at the state championship. With 4 region champions, 10 individual finalists and 4 relays in finals at State, and one state champion, Wil had done something truly remarkable. Wil took a team and motivated them to reach new heights. Because of his hard work and dedication, Wil was recognized as the Region III Coach of the Year. And we couldn’t be more proud!
Wil devotes many hours at Northern Edge Real Estate helping clients make their dreams of purchasing a home a reality, but he goes over and beyond by using his personal time to give back to a team of teenagers, teaching them determination, discipline and perseverance. Wil loves watching his swimmers grow and apply every lesson they learn in the water to every day life and decision making. He believes strongly in giving equal opportunity to fairly compete, and because of this has been recognized as the 2014 Coach of the Year.
Northern Edge Real Estate is proud to support Colony High School and looks forward to seeing where each of these students’ paths lead. Join me in congratulating Wil Fernandez, 2014 Region III Coach of the Year!
