The community, part of the municipality of Anchorage, is located between the Knik Arm of the Cook Inlet and the spectacular Chugach Mountains. The Anchorage Public Transportation People Mover connects the Chugiak and Eagle River area with downtown through the Eagle Connect. This service also works with Anchor RIDES for seniors and disabled individuals between the Chugiak area and the University Medical Center.
Anchorage International Airport serves the area. The Alaska Railroadconnects Anchorage to Fairbanks through the Denali National Park.
Many Chugiak and Peters Creek residents keep private aircraft at the nearbyBirchwood Airport or they have float planes docked at Lake Spenard and other lakes in the region. Alaska residents usually drive trucks or sport utility vehicles with all-wheel drive. Snowmobiles are also used during the winter months.

Chugash State Park: This park includes the Peters Creek Valley and it is a year-round activity center for people in the Anchorage area. The 495,000 acres include mountains with Alpine peaks, forests, rivers and lakes.
Non-motorized watercraft including canoes, kayaks and rafts are permitted on the Eagle River flowing through the park. Electric motors are allowed on Eklutna Lake. The park offers 280 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding and camping. Cabins are available with reservations. All-terrain vehicles will find trails in Bird Valley and the Eklutna Lakeside Trail. Snowmobiles are allowed in six areas when the snow is deep enough to cover all vegetation. Cross-country skiing and ski touring are offered along with downhill skiing at the park’s Arctic Valley Ski Area.
Birchwood Recreation and Shooting Park: This is a private 72-acre area designed to teach proper gun handling and safety to people of all ages. This non-profit club provides rifle, pistol and shotgun ranges for target practice. Skeet shooting competition is also offered.
It’s important to note that many men and women in Alaska hunt in season for moose, caribou and other game to provide food for their families. A hunting safety class is required to obtain hunting licenses.
Chugiak Soccer Club: This soccer club and summer camp offers programs for children of all ages and adults. Teams compete at the Oberg Soccer Fields.
Chugiak, AK Utilities
Chugiak and Peters Creek is part of the Anchorage Municipality and served by Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility. The Eklutna Water Treatment Plant also serves the area.
Electricity is supplied by the Chugash Electric Association. Cable and satellite television service is available from major national providers.
The Chugiak area offers the best of Alaskan outdoors with the convenience of Anchorage, the state’s largest city. Anchorage offers all of the amenities of a big city including restaurants, shopping and entertainment.
Chugiak-Peters Creek and the neighboring communities have magnificent scenery and a relaxed lifestyle. Although people in this area will experience freezing temperatures during the winter, they will also view the amazing northern lights and experience long summer days.
Alaska’s spirit is best expressed with the Iditarod Trail Dog Race, the last great race. This 1,150-mile race through the snow from Anchorage to Nome pays tribute to the “mushers” who carried cargo, including medicine, on their sleds between the two towns, stopping at check points along the way. Dog teams were fed and changed while the mushers enjoyed the hospitality of people along the route. The race has started from the Anchorage area every year in March since 1973.
